AVIF to JPG: what to expect

AVIF is a modern format that makes very small files, but many programs, upload forms and older phones still cannot open it. JPG opens everywhere — the trade-off is a larger file.

AVIF (original)31.7 KB—
JPG, quality 85 (default)51.7 KB+63%

Best settings

  • Quality 85 keeps the photo visually identical for most uses.
  • Use 90–95 for prints or images you will edit again.
  • Transparent areas of the AVIF become white, because JPG cannot store transparency. Need transparency? Convert AVIF to PNG instead.

Common problems

  • The JPG is bigger than the AVIF. Normal: AVIF compresses about twice as well as JPG.
  • A site still rejects the image. Check its size limit; lower the quality to 75–80 to make the JPG smaller.
  • Colors look slightly different. Some AVIF photos are HDR (wide color). JPG shows them in standard colors.

Quick answers

Is my AVIF uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser; the image never leaves your device.

Can I convert many AVIF files at once?

Yes. Drop several files and download them one by one or all together.

About the AVIF Format

AVIF is the newest and most advanced image format available today, based on the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It offers significantly better compression than both JPEG and WebP — producing files up to 50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. AVIF supports HDR (High Dynamic Range), wide color gamuts, transparency, and animation. It represents the cutting edge of image compression technology.

AVIF was first released in 2019, based on the royalty-free AV1 video codec. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media, which includes major tech companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, and Amazon. Browser support has been rapidly expanding since 2020.

Advantages

  • Best compression ratio of any image format
  • Up to 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality
  • HDR and wide color gamut support
  • Transparency and animation support
  • Royalty-free and open standard

Disadvantages

  • Slower encoding time than JPEG or WebP
  • Limited support in older browsers and software
  • Some applications cannot open AVIF files natively
  • Not yet universally adopted

About the JPG Format

JPEG is the most widely used image format on the internet. It uses lossy compression, which means it reduces file size by discarding some image data that the human eye is unlikely to notice. This makes JPEG ideal for photographs and complex images with many color variations. However, each time you save a JPEG, it loses a small amount of quality — this is known as generation loss. JPEG does not support transparency or animation.

The JPEG format was created in 1992 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. It quickly became the standard for digital photography and web images due to its efficient compression and universal browser support.

Advantages

  • Extremely small file sizes for photos
  • Universal support across all devices and browsers
  • Adjustable compression quality
  • Ideal for photographs and complex images

Disadvantages

  • Lossy compression — quality degrades with each save
  • No transparency support
  • No animation support
  • Not ideal for text, line art, or sharp edges
