Why Convert AVIF to TIFF?

TIFF is the industry standard for professional photography and print production, supporting CMYK color and high bit depths.

AVIF vs TIFF — Format Comparison

Feature AVIF TIFF
Full Name AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
Compression Lossy & Lossless Lossless
Transparency ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Animation ✅ Yes ❌ No
Color Depth Up to 12-bit HDR Up to 48-bit
Best For Next-gen web images, HDR photography, maximum compression with high quality. Professional photography, print publishing, archival storage, high-quality image editing.

About the AVIF Format

AVIF is the newest and most advanced image format available today, based on the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It offers significantly better compression than both JPEG and WebP — producing files up to 50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. AVIF supports HDR (High Dynamic Range), wide color gamuts, transparency, and animation. It represents the cutting edge of image compression technology.

AVIF was first released in 2019, based on the royalty-free AV1 video codec. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media, which includes major tech companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, and Amazon. Browser support has been rapidly expanding since 2020.

✅ Advantages

  • Best compression ratio of any image format
  • Up to 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality
  • HDR and wide color gamut support
  • Transparency and animation support
  • Royalty-free and open standard

❌ Disadvantages

  • Slower encoding time than JPEG or WebP
  • Limited support in older browsers and software
  • Some applications cannot open AVIF files natively
  • Not yet universally adopted

About the TIFF Format

TIFF is a professional-grade image format widely used in photography, publishing, and archival storage. It supports lossless compression, multiple color spaces (RGB, CMYK), high bit depths, and can store multiple pages or layers in a single file. TIFF files are valued for their flexibility and quality, but they are too large for web use. They are the preferred format for print workflows and situations where maximum image quality must be preserved.

TIFF was originally created by Aldus Corporation in 1986 and is now maintained by Adobe Systems. It was designed as a universal format for storing high-quality raster images, and it has become the industry standard for professional photography and print production.

✅ Advantages

  • Lossless compression preserves full quality
  • Supports CMYK color space for print
  • High bit depth (up to 48-bit)
  • Can store multiple pages/layers
  • Industry standard for professional photography and print

❌ Disadvantages

  • Very large file sizes
  • Not supported by web browsers natively
  • Overkill for everyday use
  • Slow to open and process due to large size
