Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any quality loss when trimming?
No. Our trimmer uses FFmpeg stream copy mode (-c copy), which extracts the selected portion without re-encoding. The output has the exact same quality as the original.
Why is trimming so fast?
Because we use stream copy instead of re-encoding. The video data is simply copied from the input to the output at the specified timestamps — no CPU-intensive encoding needed.
What time format should I use?
Use HH:MM:SS format: 00:01:30 means 1 minute and 30 seconds. You can also use seconds (e.g., 90 for 1:30). Decimal precision is supported (e.g., 00:01:30.500).
Can I trim the beginning or end of a video?
Yes. To trim the beginning, set your start time to where you want the video to begin. To trim the end, set the end time to where you want it to stop. For example, start=00:00:10 end=00:02:00 removes the first 10 seconds and everything after 2 minutes.
Why might the cut point be slightly off?
Stream copy can only cut at keyframes (typically every 2-5 seconds). The actual cut point may be a few frames before your specified timestamp. This is a trade-off for instant processing and zero quality loss.
Lossless Video Trimming
Our video trimmer uses FFmpeg's stream copy mode, which means zero re-encoding and zero quality loss. The selected portion is extracted directly from the original file's data stream, making the process nearly instant regardless of file size.
This is ideal for removing unwanted introductions or endings, extracting highlights from long recordings, splitting screen recordings into segments, and cutting commercials from recorded shows.
Tips for Precise Trimming
Stream copy mode cuts at the nearest keyframe, which means cuts may be off by 1-5 seconds. If you need frame-accurate cuts, you can re-encode the trimmed portion using our Video Compressor tool afterward. For most use cases, keyframe-accurate cutting is perfectly sufficient.
