What Is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It produces files ~50% smaller than JPEG at the same quality. However, it creates compatibility problems with Windows, websites, and non-Apple software. Converting to JPG makes photos universally compatible with every device, browser, and application.

When to Convert HEIC to JPG

iPhone users convert before sharing with Windows or Android users. Web developers convert for websites since no browser supports HEIC. Social media users convert for reliable platform uploads. Business users convert for Word documents and presentations. Photographers convert for design tools lacking HEIC support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPhone save as HEIC?

Apple uses HEIC because it produces ~50% smaller files. Change in Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.

Are photos uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs in your browser using the heic2any library.

Will I lose quality?

Minimal loss — both use lossy compression. The visual difference is typically imperceptible.

Can I convert HEIF files too?

Yes. HEIC is a specific HEIF implementation. Both .heic and .heif files work.
